Research says you have approximately 26 seconds to make a first impression. During this brief period, opinions are formed based on a person's appearance, body language, and demeanor.
Whether the headshot is for your LinkedIn photo, company website, or dating profile – make your first impression the very best!
“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” - Will Rogers
Every picture tells a story. It speaks volumes about your brand, your style, your professionalism, and your personality. Whether you are a lawyer, a schoolteacher, an electrician, a plumber, a dentist, a doctor, or a CEO, your headshot is your first impression. Make it a good one.
First impressions can have a significant impact on professional success.
Let’s face it, before you even walk into an interview a number of people (your recruiter, human resources at the company, and your potential future coworkers) have already scoped out your LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram page. Your interview, audition or casting call begins the moment you walk into a room and your headshot might be the very reason you were invited into that room or prevent you from getting in that room in the first place.
These days headhunters and human resources professionals ask two very important questions before any type of meeting, do you have the skills required for the position and are you a good fit for the company? When they see the amazing headshot that represents your whole package it makes the decision a whole lot easier.
Depending on what the headshot will be used for, your pose and stance will vary. If you’re trying to look powerful and confident there are certain muscles that need to be activated in your face and there are certain ways you must sit in your chair. If you want to look fun and approachable for a dating profile, I will pose you completely differently. It’s important that a “genuine happiness” comes across in your photos. I am relentless in my pursuit of giving you exactly what you want.
Your headshot provides a glimpse into your personality and helps to create a positive and lasting first impression. There are many different types of headshots and each serve a different purpose.
Corporate Headshots - Corporate headshots are typically taken in a studio with a plain solid color background.
Corporate headshots are typically used for business purposes such as LinkedIn profiles, company websites, newsletters, or business cards. The focus of these headshots is to convey a sense of professionalism, reliability, and trustworthiness.
Acting Headshots - Acting headshots are designed to showcase an actor's range and versatility. They often feature a variety of different facial expressions and poses to convey different emotions.
These headshots are intended to help casting directors and agents get a sense of an actor's range and suitability for different roles.
Modeling Headshots - Modeling headshots are similar to acting headshots but are focused more on physical appearance. They often feature full-body shots and may showcase a model's ability to pose in different ways.
Modeling headshots are used by models or beauty pageant contestants to showcase their skills. The photos may also be used by modeling agencies to help match models with specific clients and projects.
Creative Headshots - Creative headshots are less conventional and often feature more artistic elements. They may incorporate bold colorful backdrops, props, lighting, and other creative elements.
These headshots are often used by artists, musicians, hair stylists, fashion designers, make-up artists, and other creative professionals who want to showcase their unique style and personality.
Casual Headshots - Casual headshots are more relaxed and informal than other types of headshots. These photos may feature more casual clothing and have a fun and edgy vibe. The poses used are more casual and often includes leaning forward or against a wall or piece of furniture. Laughing and looking away from the camera are common in casual headshots.
These headshots are often used for social media profiles, startup company websites, dating profiles, press releases, etc. Casual headshots convey a sense of friendliness and approachability.
We will start by discussing what the headshot will be used for (ie: company website, business card, dating website, etc). I encourage my clients to send me pictures of their outfit/wardrobe selection prior to the shoot so I can determine the ideal background and lighting choices.
I will also provide suggestions. For woman, I always recommend heavy natural makeup as it photographs amazingly. For men, I suggest moisturizing really well. I also recommend bringing your brush, comb, lint brush, moisturizer, etc. I do have these items available in my studio but sometimes people are weirded out by the idea of sharing products with others.
On the day of the shoot, I will confirm your desires for the shoot and share my creative ideas with you. Then, I will inspect your clothing closely to ensure that it is lint free and your collar is down properly. I will also ensure that your hair is in the right position and your makeup isn’t smeared.
From there, I create a lighting profile based on what you are going for, your skin tone, and your outfit. I can add dramatic effect if you are looking for a more powerful headshot by using split lighting. If you are looking for something less dramatic I may opt to go with clamshell lighting. I have an arsenal of different lighting schemes including rembrandt lighting, loop lighting, back lighting, three point lighting, overhead lighting, and broad lighting. I also utilize lighting modifiers such as beauty dishes, large soft boxes, massive scrims, 7 foot umbrellas, parabolic umbrellas, five in one reflectors, snoots, strobes, speed lights, and hot lights.
My goal is never to go with a cookie cutter headshot approach; I customize each session to compliment you and what you are looking for. Once we select the perfect lighting profile, the next step is to go over posing techniques. Double chins and wrinkles are easily corrected with a technique called turtling. By turtling or simply bringing your chin and forehead forward, you will look more attractive. Once we have discussed and practiced posing, we can start taking photos. I will take ten to twenty photos with the goal to bring out the best in you. While I am doing this you can see each individual photo as it is taken on my 4k 70 inch screen. Because so much preparation has gone into posing and setting up the perfect lighting and backdrop, we typically find a winning photo within this set. However, if we do not, then together we will figure out what the missing attribute is and we apply it to the next set of ten to twenty photos.
Once we select the winning photo, you have the option to have the photo professionally retouched. I can remove blemishes, scars, wrinkles, bags under your eyes, hair line defects, and even out skin tone in Adobe Photoshop. I can even make your face look slimmer, whatever your insecurity is, I can work my magic in Photoshop to make you look your absolute best! Once edited, the photos are delivered to you via an online gallery.
“My husband and I recently worked with Giovanni on professional head shots and it was an amazing experience. Giovanni took the time to explain how the process worked and how subtle adjustments with lighting and posing can make a huge impact on the outcome. He was 100% invested in us and made sure that we left as happy customers. He was a joy to work with and we were really pleased with the results! Highly recommend Giovanni for your photography needs.”

“Working with Giovanni the Photographer was an amazing experience. I needed headshots for a project and I had worked with 2 other photographers prior. My wife found him online and his work was precisely what I needed. His professionalism, promptness, expertise and clear love for his craft separates him from the rest. I highly recommend him. You won't be disappointed.”
- Emmanuel D.
“Giovanni created a most generous, supportive and inspiring artistic photographic session. He captured the essence of me as Emily Dickinson for my production of "The Belle of Amherst", the one-woman play I am performing at The Sandwich Arts Alliance this March 2022. Giovanni is a gifted director and photographer who understood my needs and worked patiently to achieve the desired results. He has my highest recommendation.”
- Linda M.
“If you need a professional head shot, look no further than the extremely professional Giovanni. His studio is warm and relaxing which completely mirrors his professionalism. I Google searched professional head shots in my area and I am so glad I tripped on Giovanni. Book a session with him in full confidence you made the right decision.”

“Worth it! Giovanni is a great listener and will work hard to translate your wishes into a fantastic head shot. Not only is he a great photographer, he is fun to work with.”
- Susan B.
“I had been searching for a photographer to get my head shot image taken for the last six months. As a young professional, I was keen on getting my head shot taken by an expert, however most studios offered services at a very high price range. That was when I came across Giovanni's profile and requested him for a 10 minute head shot photograph appointment. I am very camera-naive and I was very anxious to get it done quickly. Giovanni helped me feel at ease (he could clearly see that I was feeling jittery!). He made sure that I understood how lighting works, and gave me good suggestions on how to pose. He was thoroughly professional and extremely friendly! He took multiple shots of me and gave me time to consult with my family and friends to choose the best picture. I believe he is also well-versed in editing images to give it the extra sheen! I would definitely recommend him, and I look forward to booking his services for future events!”

“Giovanni is always a pleasure to work with. I stumbled upon his work through a Google search last year and it changed everything. I compete in pageants and need new headshots every competition season. The headshot he took helped me place in the top 6 fan favorite competition and quickly became a favorite photo among my family and friends. I didn’t think it was possible to like a photo more then I liked that headshot, until I saw the photos from our shoot last Thursday. To say I love the finished product would be an understatement! Giovanni artfully placed and focused each light individually during our session to make sure to make sure I looked my best (lighting can make or break a photo!). He explained every step of the process, even the little things, so that I fully understood what was happening. He also made me feel super comfortable, like I was shooting with an old friend even though we had only worked to together once prior to the session. I never felt rushed or like I was just another client, because he tailored our photo shoot to fit my needs and worked hard to help me get an image that I loved. At the end of the day the quality of the photos is what I came for, but what I will come back for is his outstanding customer service and top notch photography skills.”
